The 9 Best Jackets For Cold-Weather Workouts

In many places this time of year, morning hikes require a down jacket and a hat — and that’ll be true for at least another two months or more. So if you regularly get active outdoors, it’s worth investing in a quality coat that’s thick enough to stave off the chill, yet breathable enough to avoid trapping sweat; while still being durable enough to keep up with you during your activity of choice. It’s a trickier balance than it might seem, but we narrowed the search down to nine pieces of winter workout outerwear, all of which are proven to excel at the outdoor exercise game (or just at getting you to and from the gym).

Whether you want a light puffer jacket, a warm vest, a cozy fleece that’s good for layering or lounging, or a weather-resistant hero that will keep you bone dry in wet conditions, these are the pieces that are going to get you through the winter. Some are colorful, some are basic black, but they’re all going to keep you warm without hampering your workout. We’re particularly sweet on pieces you can easily pack in a suitcase, because some of our favorite winter athletic activities require us to travel, like skiing or snowboarding. Keep reading to shop our picks.

Tavi Breeze Pullover ($54, originally $108)

This Tavi option is extremely easy to wear. It can be worn in the rain thanks to its water-repellent properties (great for outdoor runs or hikes), and easily acts as a base layer over a thicker winter coat. The budget-friendly option also comes in a pink colorway for those that appreciate color.

On Running Climate Jacket ($110, originally $190)

Made for hiking, trekking, and just general cold weather, the On Running Climate Jacket is ideal for those looking for more insulation. The padded running jacket will keep you feeling warm, but it’s also sweat-wicking and quick drying, so you won’t feel uncomfortable. Plus, its outer shell is water repellent, so you can train in the rain. It has multiple pockets as well for all your storage needs.

FP Movement Hit the Slopes Fleece Jacket ($148)

This coat is a staple that everyone should have in their closet. When it’s not freezing outside, throw the fleece over your top or sweatshirt, and when it is super cold, layer it under your puffer. Plus, you have 20 colors to choose from so you’ll be sure to find one that fits your style.

The North Face Aconagua 3 Puffer Vest ($160)

A puffer vest is a great workout option because it’s comfortable and lightweight, but still so warm where it counts. We love that this one is insulated with a blend of down and recycled polyester with a durable water-repellent coating for all weather wear. It’s slightly oversized as well so size down if you prefer a more slim fit. It comes in three colors.

Alo Latitude Lightweight Jacket ($178)

This lightweight jacket is made of durable nylon and is ready to face the elements. The zipper goes all the way up to the high neckline for a snug fit to keep drafty air out while you run or work out. Plus, the pockets can store your belongings. The jacket comes in this playful green or black for those that are looking for an elevated basic to match their wardrobe.

FP Movement Pippa Packable Puffer Jacket ($198)

Not only is this packable puffer super easy to travel with, it’s designed with outdoor adventures in mind. The jacket is water-resistant and features PrimaLoft insulation. Plus, it’s incredibly stylish with a boxy oversized fit and the puffer comes in a myriad of colors — 24 to be exact.

“This jacket is so comfortable, it truly feels like I’m walking around wrapped up in a down comforter 24/7…The style provides ample warmth — I’ve already worn it up to the mountains, in the snow, and even in a mild rainstorm, where it held up perfectly and kept me feeling comfortable in each environment,” says one of our editors. Alo Gold Rush Puffer ($198)

Sometimes a cropped jacket is just easier to move in. Plus, this one from Alo is adorable. We love the drawstrings at the side, so you can control the hemline. Plus, the zippered pockets will help keep your belongings secure.

Alo Foxy Sherpa Jacket ($218)

This is a bestseller, and it’s finally back in stock, but likely not for long. If you’ve been eyeing it all season long, now’s your chance to make it yours. It’s the perfect accessory for those chilly morning walks. It comes in four colors, including white, black, camel tan, and dark brown.

The North Face Nuptse 1996 Packable Quilted 700 Fill Power Down Jacket ($330)

This waist-length puffer is a staple jacket. It’s warm, comfortable, and so easy to style. It comes in a few colors, but the blue is a personal favorite, and we love that the jacket can be made compact — making it perfect for backpacking.
