Is Oats Overnight the Perfect High-Protein Breakfast? I Tried It

Overnight oats first became popular around 2012-2015, when you couldn’t scroll through Instagram or Pinterest without seeing a recipe. But if you ever thought they might be just a fad, by now we can unequivocally say they’re not. Overnight oats are here to stay. And while they’re pretty easy to prep, if you want a shortcut — or you want to amp up the protein and fiber content — check out Oats Overnight ($34 for eight pouches). These pre-made mixes can be blended with milk to create the perfect nutrient-rich overnight oats.

The brand sent me four of its vegan flavors, which use plant-based protein and can be mixed with a non-dairy milk alternative. Here, what I think about the taste and nutritional value of this overnight oats shortcut.

What I Like About Oats Overnight

The product really is that easy to prepare. You’ll get an Oats Overnight Shaker Bottle free with your first order. To make, just fill the cup to the designated fill line with the milk of your choice (I used unsweetened soy milk), stir in the Oats Overnight packet, pop the container in the fridge, and in the morning, you just grab the bottle and eat up.

Adding one cup of milk makes it have more of a thick smoothie texture that you can drink straight from the shaker bottle. If you prefer a spoonable consistency, pour the packet into a bowl or mason jar, add less milk (I used three-quarters cup), and in the morning you can enjoy it like regular oatmeal, cold or warmed up.

I tried Oats Overnight both as a drink and thicker with a spoon, and preferred the more traditional oatmeal consistency. It was super creamy thanks to soaked oats and the pea protein, but there was no weird chalky texture. The flavor was perfectly sweet (like dessert!), and even though the Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Cacao Crunch was my fave, I really loved all the flavors. They tasted delicious on their own, but I also like adding fresh fruit.

I feel good about the ingredients in Oats Overnight, too. The vegan protein blend is often pea protein, and sometimes also contains fava bean protein. Additional protein and fiber comes from ingredients like hemp hearts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds. It makes it easy to know you’re starting your morning on the right foot.

What to Consider Before Trying Oats Overnight

I received four vegan flavors: Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Cacao Crunch, Blueberry Cobbler, Maple Pancakes, and Chai Latte (currently sold out). The other vegan flavors include: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Covered Banana, Cinnamon Roll, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt, Snickerdoodle, Pumpkin Pie, and Banana Bread. Many of the other flavors they offer are made with whey protein, so they’re not vegan.

Also, Oats Overnight suggests letting the packets soak for at least four to five hours for optimal texture, but they note that you can drink them immediately; it’ll just have a more textured mouthfeel. Good news if you tend to forget to meal prep.
